A building with a history

The property has a storied past. It was purchased by the Catholic Society of Children’s Friends Salzburg in 1889, and served as a home for many orphans through the years. In 1890, a primary school was established in the building, followed by a grammar school in the early 20th century, which was converted to a general secondary school between the wars.

During World War II, the property was turned into a reform school for school-aged girls, and then from 1945 on, it became a state reform school for young males again. It trained young people in gardening, metalworking, carpentry, tailoring, shoemaking, baking and agriculture at in-house workshops until the 1990s.
